Welcome to the future of State Street!

This exciting project’s main objectives are to improve local and regional connectivity for people who use State Street, create a complementary network of districts to culminate a sense of place, and improve the aesthetic appearance of the corridor. A vibrant and safe State Street will be more welcoming for residents and visitors alike and create a place to shop, dine, live and play.

Your continued involvement throughout the planning process will be imperative in designing a State Street that draws people in and celebrates Midvale’s community and character.

What is a Corridor Study?

A corridor study is a planning project that defines the relationships between a roadway and its adjacent land. Corridor studies are used to:

  • Define acceptable levels of access and mobility,
  • Determine transportation system needs to support surrounding land uses, and
  • Promote redevelopment of an underperforming corridor.

Corridor studies are an effective tool for assessing existing conditions, developing a preferred future condition, and can offer interim fixes for transitioning corridors as they change. Specific benefits of a corridor study may include:

  • Maximization of existing infrastructure
  • Improved safety conditions
  • Development of coordinated land uses
  • Access or mobility improvements
  • Address poor air quality with more opportunities for walking, cycling and riding public transit

Community Engagement

The Community Engagement for the Midvale State Street Corridor Study involved consulting and collaborating with a range of community members and project stakeholders. The project team met with “people where they are” with intercept surveys, provided online surveys, engaged the community and stakeholders with a design workshop, informed Midvale residents through social media, and invited participation with Engage Midvale’s website through sidewalk stencils along State Street.

The Community Engagement Internal Group included Core Team Members, the Consultant Team, Midvale City Representatives, WFRC Representative, and UDOT Staff. The Core Design Team, in addition to Midvale’s City Mayor, met on-site to visit key destinations along the State Street corridor. The group observed a range of opportunities and constraints facing State Street.

The Midvale State Street Corridor Study online survey launched on March 24, 2022 and was open through the end of April, using the online platform ‘Bang The Table’, hosted at EngageMidvale.com/StateStreet. 184 people responded to the survey, providing useful data and feedback. Responses focused on the constraints and negative aspects of the corridor, though when asked for any additional comments at the end of the survey, many left aspirational comments: “Midvale has SUCH potential and I can’t wait to see it evolve into a welcoming (safer) town!”

During the intercept survey, the Project Team met people along State Street and spoke with six individuals mostly at bus stop location. Respondents were happy to answer questions, with many suggesting street trees and additional seating. Stakeholder interviews were conducted with developers, brokers, major property owners, and other public agency partners.

A hands-on design workshop included the results from the comprehensive analysis, inspirational ideas to share with the public with relevant case studies and design ideas, project goals and the vision statement, street cross sections, urban design and development/infill preferences. The final public engagement effort was an open house booth at the 2022 Midvale Harvest Days Festival. Respondents gave positive feedback regarding the project vision and goals. Action Plan items that drew the greatest amount of support included the concepts to convert canals to trails, increased art and dining opportunities along State Street and increased landscaping along the corridor.
